The Library

I love it when things come together and work out the way you planned! This hardly ever happens around here, but this weekend it did and I am one happy camper! It all started with a trip to Ikea! Believe it or not but I had never been to Ikea! I know, I must be the last person on earth to have never been there! Well, Im a believer now! King of the Crazies and I spent all day there, and purchased way more than I intended, but that's OK, because I got what I went for and also some other really cool stuff! So.... what I went there for was the Billy bookcases to build a "built-in" bookcase in our library. I got the idea from here and worked it to make it fit in my space.
First, put the bookcases together (obviously!), then we had to lift them up a bit to fit the baseboard.
See the 2 pieces of wood under the bookcase?

Then, we put a backer on the top and bottom then attached the baseboard and the crown moulding to that.
Backer wood attached to the shelves at top and bottom, then trim attached to that.
Looks almost "built-in" with just the top and bottom trim!

After the baseboard and crown moulding were attached we added trim where the shelves met (or because of spacing, didn't quite meet!)
Here is the finished product, all dressed up! I'm so over the moon happy with it! I've been imagining these shelves for years, I'm just so happy they are finally a reality!

I think we need more books! It looks a little sparse right now, but I know with all the reading we do, it will be full in no time!

DIY Coffee Table/Ottoman

There is a lot going on around here! The biggest project should be done this weekend and then I should have some pictures for you next week~ I'm pretty excited about it! But until then I have another little project to show you!
I have been on the lookout for the perfect coffee table for our family room~ to no avail! I needed a really large one since it needs to service a couch and loveseat and I wanted it round (puppies tend to chew on corners!) Since I haven't been able to find exactly what I want for the price I want to pay I decided it would be a great DIY opportunity! So, I enlisted hubby to make the actual piece of furniture out of wood. I don't have any pictures of the process because he built it while I was at work~ sorry! It was pretty straight forward tho~ two pieces of plywood cut in a circle then he just screwed "legs" in between and put feet on the bottom.
Here is a picture of the base with the skirt lifted up so you can get the idea!

Once the base was done I simple glued a piece of foam to the top, cut a circle about 5 inches bigger than the base from the oh-so-very-versatile drop cloth and hot glued that underneath of the top. I wanted a more tailored look so I box pleated a strip of the drop cloth and again hot glued underneath the top. After that I hot glued a piece of rope trim to the space between the top and the skirt. Easy!

There you have it! It's the perfect size and shape! And it cost a fraction of anything else I found!

Success Finally!

After patching the wall, we finally got the shelves up in the bathroom! I'm sooo happy with them! Now we'll never run out of toilet paper at the wrong moment!  Have a look at what we did!

I still have a little stylizing to do, but I'm very happy it's done and it looks exactly like I had hoped!
